How long have you been in business?
Half a century of continuous theatrical and educational services to the community. Opened in 1960.
What is your primary product or service?
Live theatre performances for families and adults, educational theatre workshops for ages 4 to adult, school field trips, in-the-schools enrichment classes.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Co-Artistic Directors Chris DeCarlo and Evelyn Rudie have, between them, over 10,000 onstage performances, including seventeen operettas, the Chekhovian one-acts, and plays by such diverse authors as Albee, Jary, Shakespeare and Strindberg. Evelyn has been performing nonstop since the age of three, when she made her stage debut as Macduff’s son in Macbeth. She won an Emmy nomination at age six for her portrayal of Eloise on TV’s Playhouse 90, and is the youngest performer ever to have received a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. She has appeared in more than sixty films and television shows, including The Dinah Shore Show, 77 Sunset Strip, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and The Gift of Love, in which she co-starred with Robert Stack and Lauren Bacall. During her theatrical career, she has played everything from Tom Sawyer to Queen Elizabeth I. She is Playwright in Residence for the Playhouse. Chris has been acting, writing, directing, and teaching for more than forty years. Over a quarter of a million people have been touched by his award-winning characterization of Yiddish humorist Sholom Aleichem. His directorial and dramaturgical projects include four of Jerry Mayer’s long-running comedies, Annie Reiner’s Mirage a Trois, Canadian playwright Michel Garneau’s controversial Quatre a Quatre and Diane Samuels’ Kindertransport. Chris was a member of the Performing Arts Committee for the Santa Monica Arts Commission for nine years.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Santa Monica Playhouse is considered "one of the most respected of Los Angeles theatres" by Hollywood Reporter. Known for its innovative, cutting-edge theatre, the Playhouse has a record number of records and first in L.A. theatre, including being the first company to introduce Eugene Ionesco to Los Angeles, producing the longest-running Jewish Musical in L.A. theatre history ("Author! Author! - an evening with Sholom Aleichem), and the longest-running teen dramedy in L.A. theatre history ("Dear Gabby - the confessions of an over-achiever" - 15 years in its initial run). It also hosts the only Japan-America and UK-America professional theatre exchange for artists as young as ten years old.

The Playhouse is located at 1211 4th Street, three buildings south of Wilshire. In most cases, taking the 10 West to the 4th street exit is the fastest way to get to the Playhouse. Go North(right) on 4th until you pass Arizona (4 blocks) the next street after Arizona is Wilshire. We are on the East (right) side of the street just before you get to Wilshire. Your best bet for parking is municipal parking structure #1, right across the street from the theatre. Santa Monica Playhouse is conveniently located along both the Los Angeles Metro and Santa Monica Blue Bus routes. Exit at Wilshire & 4th Street (4th and Wilshire) in Santa Monica.
